動物たちの神秘に迫りましょう！

1. Camels don’t store water in their humps.
ラクダはコブに水を溜めない。

Camels can guzzle up to 30 gallons of water in 13 minutes.
And while you may believe that camels store water in their humps,
that’s actually not true.

Gallon＝ガロン(1ガロン＝3.8ℓ）
ラクダは13分間で30ガロンもの水を飲みます。
ラクダがコブに水を溜めていると思う人もいますが、
それは真実ではないんです。
Water is stored in the bloodstream of the camels.
The humps contain fatty tissue and provide nourishment in times without a lot of food.
bloodstream＝血流
Fatty issue＝脂肪分のある繊維
Nourishment＝栄養
水はなんとラクダの血流に蓄えられます。
コブには脂肪分のある繊維が含まれており、
食料がないときの栄養補給になります。
2. Seahorses love to eat.
タツノオトシゴは食べるのが大好き。
Seahouse＝タツノオトシゴ
Seahorses are hungry and eat all the time.
They are always eating plankton and small crustaceans.
タツノオトシゴはいつもお腹が空いて食べています。
彼らはいつもプランクトンや小さな海のゴミを食べます。
Seahorses don’t have stomachs,
so the food they consume is digested almost immediately.
胃袋がないので吸収した食べ物は直ちに
消化されてしまいます。
Seahorses do have intestines so that they can absorb nutrients
but without a stomach,
all these animals want is food.
Cats really do always land on their feet.
タツノオトシゴは腸を持っているので栄養を吸収できますが
胃袋はないので食べ物を欲するだけなのです。
eat like a house＝馬のように食べる＝大食いだ！
と言います。タツノオトシゴの名前も関係あるのでしょうか？
3. Cats really do always land on their feet.
猫は常に無事に地面に着地できます。
land on one’s feet＝無事に着地する
（から転じて窮地を乗り切るの意味もあります。）
It’s no wonder cats always land on their feet.
And it all thanks to Physics. Cats use both halves of their bodies separately
to ensure they rotate fast enough to land on their feet. Lucky.
猫が常に無事に地面に着地できるのは驚くべきことではありません。
これは身体的特徴のおかげです。かかとを上手に使って
着地します。
（猫なで声を使って窮地を乗り切る・・・ってことも時にできます
よね！？）
4. The octopus has a lot of organs.
タコは多臓器を持つ。
Did you know that an octopus has nine brains?
Each arm has a smaller brain in addition to one central brain,
bringing the total to nine.
なんと脳みそが９個もあるんですよ。
それぞれの8本の腕には小さな脳があって中心的な脳みそを合わせると９個です。
It also has blue blood and three hearts.
おまけに血液は青いし心臓は三つあります。
え！じゃあ蟹味噌よりもタコ味噌の方が美味しいのでは？
などと思ってしまいました。
5. Baby elephants are just like human babies.
赤ちゃん象はまさに人間の赤ちゃんみたいでなんです！
だいぶ大きさは違うけれど・・・
Baby elephants comfort themselves very similarly to a baby,
by sucking their trunks.
trunk（トランク）＝ゾウの鼻
自分の長いはなをしゃぶる事で落ち着くそうです。
そう人間の赤ちゃんの指しゃぶりと一緒です！
Science is all around us and there are so many misconceptions
and unknowns to find out.
