運動会の定番競技・英語で言えるかな？

それでも年に一度の晴れ舞台。
時短運動会・ユニーク競技など時代を反映しながらも
やはり昔ながらの競技も人気です。

運動会は英語でSports Day / Field Dayと言います。

今回は運動会の競技を英語で説明してみましょう♪

1. 徒競走・かけっこ

かけっこ＝sprint（スプリント）

全力疾走することをspringと言います。

With a call “ready”, and a bang of starter pistol( a blank handgun),
students make a dash.

2. パン食い競争

ホットドッグ早食いはあっても
パン食い競争はありません。

言うなれば
bun biting race（バンバイティングレイス）でしょう。

Studets make a dash to a bun hanging with a string and try to catch it with their mouths. (or hands) Then, they run to the goal.

3. 二人三脚

Three-legged race（スリーレッグドレイス）

A student’s right leg is tied to another student’s left leg.
Then, they run to the goal together.
The key to win this game is to keep pace with each other.

この発展版が「ムカデ競争」です。
ムカデはcentipadeと言います。centipade raceというとなんとも
気持ち悪いですね。

説明すると・・・
8 to 10 students make two lines holding their shoulders.
Their legs are tied and linked with a headband.
The style looks like a big centipade.
It is very important for students to run in sync.

4. 借り物競走

something borrowed race / borrowing race

アメリカにも似たようなゲームがあります。
scavenger huntと言います。

scavengerとはゴミを漁る人という意味ですが、
リストアップされた項目を数日かけて
お金をかけずに探し当てるというゲームで
アメリカの大学で行われるそうです。

5. リレー

relayと言います。
言葉は同じですが、発音が異なります。

リレーの「リ」にアクセントをおきます。
オリンピックでも注目の競技ですね。

6. 綱引き

Tug of war（タグオブウォー）

Teams consist of students in each class. They pull a rope from opposite ends. The team pulling the rope a longer distance can win.

7. 玉入れ

beanbag toss（ビーンバッグトス）

Students throw small beansbags into their own basket at the center of a circle. The team putting more beanbags in to the basket will win the game.

8. 騎馬戦

男子校の定番といえば騎馬戦でした。
英語では
A mock cavalry battleというそうです。

mockとはゴッコ、偽の、という意味.
cavalryとは騎馬を意味します。

なので騎馬戦ごっこ、騎馬戦を模した競技という意味です。

他にもマーチングバンドや組み立て体操、
フォークダンスなど運動会を盛り上げる競技がありますが
一番楽しみなのは、やっぱりお弁当かな。
